Cripple Creek - Skip Spence (Oar)
Cripple Creek Ferry - Neil Young (After the Gold Rush)
Up On Cripple Creek - The Band (The Band)

So what's the significance of Cripple Creek? Is it a nice place? Did something happen there?

I only know it was a location for part of an 1890's gold rush to Colorado. Not sure why those particular songs were written about it, exept for the possible tie-in with the album title "After the Gold Rush."

Very small picturesque mining town in the middle of nowhere, basically (at least when you're a teenager and think you have better things to do). I was there...let's see... 15 years ago! Don't know if they were already there when I visited, but it looks like they gukked (technical term, you know) the place up with casinos.I seem to remember something about the entrance to a mine? but then around there there are lots of them.

Hello Phyllis (can we call you Phyl in the future?)

Okay then, you were there 15 years ago - that would be 1990. Allowing for a little mental error, no problem. Actually, Cripple Creek (as well as three other Colorado towns) did not allow gambling until 1991. I lived in Colorado for ten years - stradling both the before AND after gambling was allowed (and continue to visit my daughters who realize they are living in the BEST state in the nation). Here's the skinny. The two towns closest to Denver have had diverse success - Black Hawk (the first town you come across) is doing remarkably well. Central City, which is actually one of the towns that was having such a hard time 15 years ago that the legislature would even condsider gambling is suffering badly. Cripple Creek (which is closest to Colorado Springs) is doing okay. They are no longer a "very small picturesque mining town in the middle of nowhere" if they ever were. At least the folks there are getting by. By the way, I once again live in New Jersey (through no fault of my own - elders need attention), but I would be happy to give the skinny on the benefits of living in Colorado compared to almost anywhere else!

Well, it has been a long time. I seem to remember coming over the edge of a mountain/hill or something and coming down into a valley overlooking a small western town. Maybe that was Silverton? I remember Leadville, Durango and something about Mount Pisgah? It's getting foggy. We also went down into the Mollie Kathleen gold mine (guess I remember more than I thought) and rode on the Durango and Silverton train.

Anyone familiar with Newcastle?

RE: Cripple Creek

My cousin and her family briefly lived in New Castle in the early 70's before a business opportunity opened up in Grand Lake.

I believe the new name for it is Differently Abled Creek.

LMAO! Or how about Physically Challenged Creek? Sorry, no offense to those who might be... Ah, what a politcally correct world we live in these days...!
