Need help re CD burning and MP3 files.

Since my car cd player ate my "Garden State" soundtrack, I finally went out and got a new one. Its a JVC and it will accept MP3 formatted discs. I've never even tried to put together a CD from favorites of old ones that I have. I'm confused as to what type of CD to use where you can record a song at a time where it will keep adding them rather than erasing them. Also, how are those websites where you pay a one time fee and then can download as many songs as you like, such as mymusic.com. Or are there better ways to go about it?
Thanks!

Katnip,

I've had 4 different CD burners in the time that they've been available and I've had very little luck at all in using the "add-song' feature. I finally got fed up and now burn a CD only when I have enough tunes/files to fill a CD sufficiently all at once.

I also had a trial subscription to one of the "unlimited download" sites, (I won't name them here). Everything was fine until the three months was up. At that time I sent an email canceling my subscription, (I couldn't find enough tunes that I wanted). After about 6 months they sent me a threatening email stating that they were going to report me to the credit bureaus unless I paid them $9.99 per month for 6 months to "clear" my account. No warning, just this threatening note. I wrote back asking them to check their records and let them know that I hadn't downloaded any music for a long period of time and after a few back-and-forths they finally dropped the matter.

I'm not trying to say that all sites are like this, (I've even considered joining another), but I find it much easier to convert my CD collection to MP3's myself. I use a purchased program, (CoolPro 2), to do this, but there are a number of free programs that you can download from the net that can also do this for you. I'm not up on the current best ones, but I used WinAmp before I purchased my current application...

A couple of issues here, katnip. You do not use a special type of CD to make MP3 copies. A CD-R is just fine, although a CD-RW will allow you to erase a portion of the disc, or even the whole disc if you want. If you have songs stored as MP3's on your PC, just copy them to your CD burner. You can fit a lot more tunes per disc in that fashion.

Another way around the sometimes pesky problem of doing one song at a time is using a stand alone CD recorder. I've been using one for years and love it. The downside is that the CD will not play on other machines until the disc is finalized. But once you have 70 or 80 minutes worth of audio material, you finalize the disc and it will play on anything - even the older machines that often don't play CD's made from CD burners (but can play discs from CD recorders).

Finally, I do not see how you can be downloading from mymusic.com. I buy many CD's from this Canadian site and have never seen a download feature. Hell, they no longer even offer those 30 second sound bytes to get a flavor for a song - but they do have fair prices and free shipping from time to time (like now).

Get yourself a Copy of Nero... You can find it with rebates for 39. You can do everything with it.
