petaloid I had never heard of Nick Drake so looked him up. Interesting that he came from such an 'uppercrust' colonial background, not something we, in the UK, would usually associate with popular music. What a sad life and loss of talent. Thanks for the link. |

(Veer, I have only known Nick Drake's work for less than three years. Although he wrote and recorded many songs, shyness kept him from performing/touring, so he never hit it big here in the US, in spite of his talent.) Below is a link to a TV performance by a group out of Austin Texas that coined the word "psychedelic" -- The 13th Floor Elevators, circa 1966, featuring Roky Erickson on vocals. They were a big influence on groups like Jefferson Airplane, The Electric Prunes and even on Janis Joplin:

Damien Leith won Australian Idol last year, but don't hold that against him *g* He has a great voice (sang Nessum Dorma with a week's notice and no musical training background and did a great job - that is on youtube too) and this was one of his performances from the show, hence it isn't the whole song as the time is limited. PS I used to post here a lot, haven't been for a couple of years probably, but still go to Reader's Paradise)

Eddie Vedder's cover of Hard Sun for the movie Into the Wild is getting a lot of attention right now, but I thought I'd point out the original which is Indio/Gordon Peterson -- makes my top ten list of best songs ever produced. I'm not satisfied with the Vedder cover, but... if it renews interest in Indio, I will be ecstatic, and must admit within the context of the film, it should raise goose pimples. I love the Indio verison best for, I hope, obvious reasons...

I heard the Eddie Vedder cover and thought it was good. Like you, however, I prefer the original Indio version. Here's vintage Jimi Hendrix -- early 1967:

Now, contrast the previous Hey Joe (lip-synch Belgian TV version) with this rendition of the same song, just a few months later at the Monterey Pop Festival:

This song harks back to the innocence of another time. It has sort of a 'Penny Lane' quality to it.
