Kate Bush: Aerial

Hey, this is pretty good, on first listen. I think a lot of you might like it, partly for its emphasis on melody. The production is a lot less cluttered that on her last one (The Red Shoes) which I didn't like. I like this more than anything she's done since Hounds of Love.

This is the only CD I've bought this year that has vocals in English!

I have liked much of her work -- sounds like something I should check out.

Hopefully I can find something more to say about it after I've listened a few times.

I have been hearing one of the songs "King of the Mt", on one of our local stations, and saw some of the video at Yahoo. I REALLY like what I'm hearing so far!

And, in my opinion, there's much stronger material on the album than that. The whole second disc is a series of songs linked together, and all of it is good. If you want, it's possible to tease out a lot of disinct echoes of various musical styles, but they are put to work to further her own vision. Sometimes you start at one point and end up in unexpected places. I think thematically it's very interesting the way it takes her push toward ecstasy and extreme states of consiousness in general and successfully places it in a domestic context. (It's funny: I have to listen to it a little differently than what I've gotten used to, since I can understand the lyrics, and her lyrics have generally drawn me in, in the past.)

This still sounds very good to me. Has anyone else heard it? I'm a little surprised she isn't more of an accepted classic around here. I mean, she's not classic rock, but most of her music works with a full pack of musical possibilities, including a strong sense of melody.

Don't know how much Johnny Cash got around - but Kate Bush is from Bexleyheath, Kent; very English. Lerue, my brother had Aerial and first listening put me off, even though I have and like all of KB's earlier albums. Should I give it a second chance then?

It depends what you didn't like about it, I guess. I wouldn't describe it as difficult, but I think it does require a leisurely listen to get into it. There's a lot of detail there which is easy to miss on a casual listen. Sometimes the melodic lines follow the words really closely, if that makes any sense (think: certain classical compositions where texts are set to music), and it can make the melodies, at times, a little convoluted. I don't consider that a bad thing, but it means that the songs don't always work as immediate catchy poppy songs the way many of her pasts songs have worked.

Thanks - I'll give it another go then! Not bothered about catchy poppy songs generally.
