Ode to Joy

I was very moved in Church last week by the Church band singing Beethovens "Ode to Joy". I never hear this much as a choral performance. I think a Latino artist named Miguel Rios did a version of it in the 70s that was a minor hit. Anyone know a good choral performance of this on CD?

Im not able to answer the question at hand rd,but it sure is a pretty song!

RD It is a great piece to sing in full choral arrangement with orchestra. Try to get a recording of it done that way, as written.I can't give you a certain one but most are done well if accompanied by a major orchestra.

THE ONLY SEMI-HIT VERSION I CAN REMEMBER FROM THE '70'S WAS AN INSTRUMENTAL VERSION BY A GROUP I BELIEVE WAS CALLED APOLLO 13. OF COURSE IT DIDN'T SOUND AS COOL AS A FULL CLASSICAL ARRANGEMENT WOULD, BUT SOMETIMES YOU TAKE WHAT YOU CAN GET.

The version you mention was called "Joy" by Apollo 100. It was done on a Moog synthesiser and I think it actually might have blended Ode to Joy with Jesu joy of Mans Desire by Bach. I could be wrong, it's been a while.

Yeah guys apollo 100 did that fine instrumental in the 70s,early 70s i believe. Its great and i have the 45.I believe this was a reworking of bachs joy of mans desire as rd mentioned, and not ode to joy by beethoven.

I remember that song by Apollo 100 ;)
Here is a link that might be useful: Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring

Thanks for the correction RD. I guess you can't remember them all, especially if it didn't interest you that much in the first place, but it'll sure stick with me now.

Leo Kottke did a great cover of this peice many years ago on his 6 & 12 string guitar LP. I wonder if any digital, remastered or updated versions exist? Cheers, Barrie.

When you talk about this peice (sic), I hope you are not talking about the title of this thread, Las Palmas. Ode to Joy is one song, the piece Leo does on 6 & 12 String Guitar is "Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring." By the way, the album has been re-issued on CD twice. YO, WHAT'S THE DEAL? ARE IMAGES NO LONGER ALLOWED TO BE POSTED IN THIS FORUM? IF SO, WHY?

When I was in college chorus, we sang "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desire" to Ode To Joy. I don't know if there are different lyrics set to this piece. We sounded pretty awful, by the way.

Ric The G, you're right. I was going on memory. Serves me right. Good to know it's out on CD. I'll have to look for it. Here's the scan from my Sonet 1972 copy of Loe Kottke 6 & 12 string guitar.

It was nice to hear that Apollo 100 version in the movie "the 40 year old virgin".

RD, my first introduction to the Ode of Joy was via the Miguel Rios version - I really liked it at the time, but then I was only 13 or so... If you are looking for a proper performance of the Beethoven piece - it is part of his 9th symphony, and actually called "Freude schöner Götterfunken". I don't have any favourite versions as I'm not big on Beethoven, but in case of doubt try one conducted by Herbert von Karajan - he is supposed to be a guarantee for high quality!
