Our Best Albums of 2005 List

Okay, so those b****es at Rolling Stone don't know what they're talking about, know what I'm sayin'? So let's bust out our own lists. Here's mine: Kate Bush: Aerial Miguel "Anga" Diaz: Echu Mingua Mohammad Iskandar: Hakini Jon Hassell: Maarifa Sreet Gilberto Santa Rosa/El Gran Combo: Gilberto Santa Rosa y El Gran Combo - Asi es Nuestra Navidad Yousef Shamoun: Taneh wu Raneh Fiona Apple: Incredible Machine Various: Choubi Choubi! Folk & Pop Music from Iraq[Actually a compilation of older material, but pretty new to the western world, even me] Mayito Rivera: Llego La Hora Calle 13: Calle 13 [uh oh, Music Room would definitely not approve of that one] I don't seriously believe these are THE BEST, since I haven't heard nearly enough, but these are the 2005 releases I like best, and at least it's a unique list. (WHY IS THIS THING SWALLOWING MY LINE BREAKS?!)

Fiona apples new one sounds pretty good, from what little ive heard of it.A bigger bang by the stones is really good, but with 16 songs it may be too long for some listeners.Thats all ive got for now.

Incidentally I meant to say "lists" so that we could all post our own lists if we wanted. (I wasn't using the royal "we" for me.)

Really enjoyed Beck's GUERO

Yeah! What happened to the line breaks. I can't make columns or pause for dramatic affect anymore. A space saving thing, perhaps? Anyway, the new Brian Eno, Another Day on Earth, is great for this year. Good to hear him sing again.

Aruu, glad you mentioned the paragraph thing because I had thought it was only me. I just sent a message about the problem through the mail link, so maybe they will fix it.

I don't think it's a space-saving thing. More likely whatever parses html (at least in the body of messages) somehow got deleted, because I can't make words bold or italicize them any more either. But then why aren't the little tags showing up? Testing, testing.

LeRue---I went out and listened to lots of 2005 releases at Barnes & Noble and went with the Kate Bush disc. Why didn't I listen to you in the first place?

I liked Jack Johnson's release this year and.......I think that's all I've picked up. Most of the stuff I sampled at B&N did not live up to the hype, IMO.

Best album of 2005, for me, K.T.Tunstall, "Eye to the Telescope"

It was nice to see Pendragon finally release a new album (Believe). Slightly different than their other releases, but still miles ahead of most of what was released in 2005.

alisonn, so does that mean you've listened to the new Kate Bush and like it?

(That reminds me, I need to send you my 04/05 Salsa y Mas mix.)

 o
Fairuz

Incidentally, alisonn, Kate Bush's top 10 world music tracks, as published by Songlines, includes a Fairuz track (not one of my personal favorites at all, however).

 o
Aerial

This is such a great album.

 o
Dengue Fever

I can't say I've actually heard this, but the audio clips sound pretty good, and people whose opinions I semi-trust have liked it. Retro, but with peculiar foreign twists.

Here is a link that might be useful: Dengue Fever: Escape from Dragon House

alisonn, one more thing: which Jack Johnson, or more simply, what is the album? I am finding lots of Jack Johnsons. (Why would a performer keep such a generic name anyway?)

RE: Our Best Albums of 2005 List

Johnson had been a professional surfer until an accident, in which he broke his nose, got his front teeth knocked out and got more than 150 stitches to his mouth and forehead, forced him to take some time off. He learned to play guitar at age 14, but did not seriously pursue a career in the arts until his college years at University of California at Santa Barbara, where he graduated with a degree in film. After graduating, Jack decided to take time out travelling (1997-98) when he co-directed and shot the purist surf film Thicker Than Water to be released later. Making friends with Garrett Dutton aka G.Love of G.Love and Special Sauce, he recorded "Rodeo Clowns" with them to be released on their 1999 album "Philadelphonic". This launched his music career and eventually lead to the release of his first album, Brushfire Fairytales in 2001 to aid in the "Thicker than Water" soundtrack.

---------

Lerue--Somehow I don't think Jack Johnson would float your boat, but I guess you never know. I would say he has kind of a mellow hip-hop sort of musical style with socially/politically conscious lyrics. Disclaimer: I really don't know much about what "hip-hop" means, so I could be slightly off-base here.

Hey Lerue, in exchange for the good stuff you've been sending, would you care for a cd with a couple of songs from each of the artists who've been bending my ears in the last few months?

I ended up listening to some clips before you got a chance to respond, and no, it probably wouldn't be my thing, although I don't hate.

I would be interested in a mix CD like that, yes.
